I Didn't Get Supabase (Now I Do)

From zero to "oh, that's what it does." Supabase explained for non-technical builders: database, auth, and storage without the jargon.

Let me tell you about my first project

I built something in Lovable. It looked great. It worked. Kind of.

The problem? All my data was hardcoded. Written directly into the code. Every time I wanted to change something, I had to go edit the file manually.

I knew Supabase existed. I saw the button in Lovable. But I didn't understand what it actually did. I thought Lovable would just... handle it? Like magic?

It didn't.

The backend was a dark place

For years, I worked at an agency that built software. Real software, for real companies.

But I was the creative part. Strategy. Design. The "front" of things.

When someone said "we need to talk to the backend team," it felt like they were summoning wizards. People who lived in a different world. Erudites of data. Experts I could never be.

The backend was dark. Mysterious. Not for people like me.

So I avoided it. For years.

Even during my ecommerce days. I spent almost 5 years building stores with Shopify. Never once did I think about databases. Shopify handled everything. I just added products and sold things.

The idea of "where does the data actually live" never crossed my mind.

Then I started building alone

When I started vibe coding, I realized something uncomfortable: I couldn't avoid the backend anymore.

If I wanted to save data, I needed a database.

If I wanted users to log in, I needed auth.

If I wanted my app to remember anything, I needed... something.

That something was Supabase.

My first projects? I spent sleepless nights trying to fix backend stuff with my eyes closed. Literally clicking things and hoping Lovable would magically repair whatever I broke.

Spoiler: it didn't.

The moment it clicked

Here's the funny part.

I was scared of the backend. It felt like this mysterious thing only experts could touch.

Meanwhile, my fiancé Nelson is a PostgreSQL expert. Literally. He works with databases every day.

One day, he decided to give me a class. He explained what he does, how databases work, what all those terms actually mean.

And something shifted.

I realized Supabase wasn't just a database. It's auth. It's storage. It's APIs. It's a whole backend in a box. And once you understand the basics, it's not that scary.

Today it's easier

Now with Lovable Cloud, it's almost magic. You click a button and you have a database. It wasn't like this a year ago.

But I'm glad I learned it the hard way.

If I hadn't struggled with "what's a table" and "why isn't this saving" and "what does RLS mean," I wouldn't build as fast as I do today. The struggle taught me things that make me faster now.

Today I can build better. I'm even studying more PostgreSQL. My mission this year? Become a super saiyan of databases.

Because here's the truth: if you understand this stuff, you'll create better things. More scalable things. You'll save tokens. You'll save hours of headache. And who knows what else.

If you feel lost, you're not alone

Here's the point.

If you ever feel lost when someone says "Supabase," you're not broken. I was there.

If you don't know what a schema is, that's fine. I didn't either.

If RLS sounds like a random acronym, welcome to the club.

I went from being terrified of the backend to being part of Supasquad. I got obsessed. I built things. I broke things. I fixed things.

Now I help other builders create. But none of that would have been possible without struggling through the basics first.

This series

This is Part 1 of Supabase for Dummies.

I'm going to explain Supabase the way I wish someone had explained it to me. No jargon. No assumptions. Just the basics, one step at a time.

What's a table? What's RLS? What's a schema? What's the difference between Lovable Cloud and your own Supabase?

I'll cover all of it.

Leave your questions. Tell me what confuses you. What scares you. What you wish someone would just explain.

This will be your handbook.
